Sunday Summary #7
literally listening to the cocteau twins right now
I spent most of my weekend rotting in bed watching terrible movies on Amazon Prime’s ever expanding catalogue. As Pride & Prejudice (2005) watched me pass it by (I’ll be back, I promise) I settled on ‘Love Me, Love Me’. Urgh. I’m sadly a sucker for an awful film, but this was predictably bad. Leaning into Amazon’s tried and tested (on WHO?) structure, the film followed a twisted love triangle, a girl caught in the middle, the ultra wealthy, and an unhappy male protagonist with a rogue, cage-fighting violent streak. It all built to a boring crescendo (a two faced “best” friend and a car on fire, sorry for the spoilers) before ending on a stupid cliff hanger.
If you have time, read the Letterboxd reviews, they sum it up.
The saving grace of TV (and my weekend viewing) was ‘Love Story’ - the new glossy JFK Jr and Carolyn Bessette drama. It. is. sooooo. good. I was really, truly committed to finishing Buffy (it’s like crawling through broken glass right now) but this show sadly pushed it to the back burner once again. It’s just filmed incredibly - plus the music, the fashion, the smoking. Do I need a cigarette? I heard the costume designer sourced real pieces from the 90s that Carolyn would’ve worn too. We are so back.
I also know the whole purpose of it wasn’t to be an ad for Calvin Klein, but I was on the website promptly after the show ended scrolling through shiny slip dresses and pencil skirts, imagining what I’d look like running around the streets of New York in ’94 without a phone.
It really was so cool to not have a phone wasn’t it?
Anyway, here’s what I captured on my favourite screen this week.
Though I spend most of my time complaining about the current weather, I know I will miss it when it’s too warm to wear a scarf. January and February are just the worst months to get through.
I was poorly in the week so this was me trying to cheer myself up with a fun breakfast - overnight oats and sprinkles, honey toast and a warm matcha latte.
Exactly how to hold a mug, for stability, for strength.
Happy Korean food and horror film night to me. I watched ‘The Fog’ (2005) whilst tucking into a line of bulgogi kimbap and some extremely spicy tteokbokki.
First time making mini egg tarts for Chinese New Year and I WISH I could tell you they were a success (cry) - but for my first time making pastry I will actually pat myself on the back and say they were a success. The pastry expands, a lot !
A matcha latte from Nagare near Spitalfields market, there’s never a free seat in there, EVER.
First time trying pork soup dumplings from Dumpling Shack ! 8/10 - also if you aren’t sitting like this on a park bench to eat your lunch thennnn what are you doing?
A week of firsts.
Observations & things:
Strangers who don’t know where they’re going will always push in front of you, it happens all the time on the tube. Give ME a chance. Follow ME.
Do people still want sourdough doughnuts? I’m staring at you Crosstown. That’s also a market research question.
Though I’m a Swiftie, Lana Del Rey should’ve won a grammy the year Taylor did for Midnights. YOYOK altered my life, sure, but Did you know there there’s a tunnel under Ocean Boulevard is such an incredible song (I need to expand my vocabulary around synonyms for ‘good’).
I’ve entered the world of making cold foam at home (two tablespoons of double cream, a splash of milk and a DASH of maple syrup) and I have to say it’s transformed my life, not for healthy reasons, because I actually think it’s not healthy at all, but in terms of a drink experience.
The Post Office queue is traumatic, what are people doing in there? Why is there always a queue? What’s the prime time to go to the Post Office, because I seem to go when everyone else thinks it’s a good time to go as well.
Until the next one,
Lory x
